Because of You (Kelly Clarkson) Songfic
Disclaimer: I do not own the PJATO characters (Luke, Percy, Grover, Annabeth)
!THE WORDS IN BOLD ARE THE LYRICS!
A/N: Flashback time is here for Maya as she reflects on her fourteen years. She regrets some things, but she eventually comes to a conclusion.
In that instant, Maya saw things she couldn’t help but to remember…things she couldn’t forget.
Her father’s choices had affected her in the worst way.
I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself cause my heart so much misery
All she had wanted was a person who cared about her. Maya sighed as she recalled a night, a long, long time ago, but left scars that would last a lifetime.
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
The flail had hurt, and done lasting damage to her face. Maya saw again her father’s face, twisted in rage, as the spike ball careened toward her face. It softened into an expression of confusion at her sobs, and transformed again to a mask of guilt.
It had been the first time he had ever hugged her.
Then, he joined with Kronos.
Maya could only watch as Luke writhed on the ground when he was not needed anymore.
I've learned the hard way, to never let it get that far
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
She had never been allowed to go to school with other children. She would look wistfully from her room at the young ones on the playground. His minions had always kept her busy.
The freeway was fast, frightening and furious. He liked to watch the news, to see what terror resulted from events. She would watch clips of accidents, massacres, and disasters, which made her terrified of the world.
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
She was hesitant to bring anyone, even Percy, Annabeth and Grover, into her confidence about anything.
I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
Maya had to be told what to do, where to go, what to say, what not to say.
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
Her tear ducts, she was sure, had dried up, though a few nights back then, her eyes were red. He would hit her if she cried.
I'm forced to fake, a smile, a laugh
Every day of my life
For Daddy’s friends, she couldn’t show that she feared him like they did. She was usually as quiet as she could be, and spoke positively when she had to.
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with
Ever since she was small, something was missing.
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid
I watched you die
I heard you cry
Every night in your sleep
Suffering from Kronos’s nightmares, he would shriek into the night; her room was upstairs, but she could hear it too clearly.
When the awful writhing finally stopped, she felt no remorse. She should be sad, that Kronos detached from him by tearing away, and leaving no lifeline for him, but strangely, she wasn’t.
But his bloodcurdling screams still echoed in her ears.
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
At only three, he disfigured her face and treated her like a disobedient, violent camper, like she should know better
At four, she worked up the courage to leave, but it was hard.
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
He never cared. When she was ill, she had to fight it off herself. Colds and fevers left her weak.
And now I cry
In the middle of the night
For the same darn thing
At fourteen now, nine years after he died, Maya thinks about the father he could have been, should have been, but never was. He had never told her once that he loved her. She sobs at night. What a waste of what could have been a good life.
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I tried my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in
Because of you
I'm ashamed of my life because it's empty
Because of you
I am afraid
Just put the past behind you; everyone says that. She tried. She can’t.
She hasn’t exactly been honest with people about most things. They were best left unsaid anyway,
She hadn’t done anything to be proud of. He certainly didn’t. She had to make the best of the life she had left.
Because of you
All of her miseries and pains…
Because of you
…they were all his fault.
