She had left her kits, plus Rosewing's (Rosewing had given her kits to Silverpool to raise so that she (rosewing) could still carry out warrior duties) in the nursery to be a better mentor. The kits were 5 moons old, they'd live if she went out. Silverpool was bleeding from a long scratch on her flank and blood fell into her eyes.

Darkpaw giggled with sadistic glee as she leapt onto Sparrowpaw's back. "Hey, kitty!" Batpaw was being a little more careful as he weaved through Brambleclaw's paws, trying to trip up the warrior. He raked a paw through Brambleclaw's pelt, leaving a long, if shallow, gash on his belly.

Silverpool, still fighting fiercely, ripped Darkpaw off of her apprentice's back and rammed Darkpaw's head into a tree. Darkpaw fell to the ground, but Silverpool didn't wait. She was busy dragging Batpaw by his tail and tangling it in a bush.

Darkpaw let out one anguished mew and then lay still. Batpaw looked at Silverpool, furious. "You HURT MY SISTER!" He tried to leap onto Silverpool's back, but his tail held him back. Struggling, he would have looked comical if it weren't for his sister, lying near him with blood glistening from a head wound.

Instantly, the fighting stopped. Leafpool and Jaypaw raced over to the still apprentice's side. Leafpool sighed in relief.

Batpaw had pulled free and buried his nose in his sister's fur. "Thank StarClan," He whispered. Flamepaw came bursting into the clearing. "BATPAW! Dawnpaw came and got me and...." His voice trailed off as he looked at Darkpaw's faintly rising chest. "We have to get her back to camp." He looked hostiley at the ThunderClan cats.
