Beneath the glittering full moon, a creature stepped out of the formerly still undergrowth. He arched his back and
stretched his legs in a long yawn. After taking a swift drink from the nearby stream, the creature dropped his jaw to
taste the air. Scenting a juicy vole, he headed out on the trail, only to stumble upon a fox. In his haste to find his
prey, the creature failed to follow the regular cautions, the cautions he remembered from uncountable generations
ago, so the fox noticed him immediately and turned on him with a snarl. The creature tried to run, but was frozen with
fear to the ground. As the fox made shoulder contact with the creature in an attempt to overthrow him, it used a
quick snap of its teeth to rip to shreds the ear of its disturbance.
This, however, brought the creature back to consciousness. In a rage, he unsheathed his claws, sprang upon the fox’s
back, and dug in deep. The fox began to yelp in pain, thrashing about in a vain attempt to shake loose the pest
attached to its backside. Now the creature tried something else. He loosened his fore claws, leaving his hind paws to
dig into the fox’s flank, to allow himself to swipe repeatedly at the enemy’s head, ears, and neck. However, the
creature couldn’t balance himself on only his hind legs, and the fox, seeing its chance, made a swift movement and the
creature was dangling from its side. The fox rolled on its back, crushing the creature beneath it.
The creature’s life was draining quickly. He could feel it rapidly vanishing, and could see his vision blackening, as
he struggled in vain to batter against the weight with his hind paws. Just as he had given up and began to welcome
death, the weight was lifted. The creature slowly clambered to his paws to find more creatures of his kind,
round heads and pointed ears, swarming over the fox, raking claws down its flank, swiping at its nose and biting
down hard on its tail. As the fox’s eyes were extinguished and its assassins began to disappear into the forest, the
creature called out in the voice of his kind. The animals, all but one, ignored him or failed to hear, but the exception
bounded over to him with a warm look in her eyes, and touched her muzzle to his. After giving a quick lick to his
torn ear, she darted back into the foliage after the others. Only once did she look back, and with a playful twitch of
the tail, took off again. The creature sat there for a while, licking his paw and grooming his wounded ear with it,
until he too loped off into the night in pursuit of his kin.
